This is a replica of the Roman Gladius from the period of about 64 - 200 AD. The Gladius was probably a copy of a Spanish weapon and went through various forms until this style which represents the final form of this sword. The Pompeii Gladius is typified by a double edged blade with a short, clipped point, The minimal crossguard and pommel were generally made of wood while the grip was fabricated of wood or bone. Designed mainly for stabbing, the Gladius was used in conjunction with the Roman shield (Scutum). This model of Gladius is often called the Pompeii after several swords of this type were unearthed from the ruins of that city.
Constructed of poplar, this sword is not intended for sparring, but will take a fair amount of abuse from adventurous young warriors. Sword comes in unfinished wood.
